Make a Splash This Summer by Becoming a Lifeguard at a Public Pool in Yonkers

Westchester County-owned pool facilities in Yonkers are seeking to fill lifeguarding positions for the coming Summer months. Specifically in Yonkers, this includes Sprain Ridge and Tibbets Brook park pools.

Becoming a lifeguard provides individuals with an opportunity to develop valuable skills across multiple areas. Lifeguards operate as members of a larger team, fostering interpersonal communication and leadership development. Lifeguards have a unique opportunity to engage with the public by enjoying their time at the pool while contributing to a positive and safe experience. Training for lifeguards includes:

  • Rescue techniques
  • Injury prevention and treatment
  • Facility operation procedures
  • How to effectively enforce rules and regulations

The Westchester County Parks Department is offering a limited number of training dates. Applicants must first complete a pre-test consisting of a 300-yard swim, 3-minute tread, and timed brick retrievals. They are then able to enroll in classes administered by the Red Cross. Pre-tests are scheduled for April 7 and May 5, with two 4-week series of classes being offered every Sunday until June 2. These pre-test and classes will take place at the Theodore Young Community Center in White Plains from 1 to 5 pm. Applicants must attend all four class sessions to receive a Red Cross Certificate.

How to Apply

All applicants must be 15 years of age by the end of the training course. There is a fee of $450 in order to register. Westchester County residents will receive preference in hiring. Applicants aged 18 or over will be required to submit to a background check. All applicants will be subject to pre-employment drug testing. Candidates are expected to have strong customer relations skills and may be required to work weekends or holidays.
