Gaelic Games to Establish Permanent Residence in Yonkers at Redmond Park

Redmond Park in Yonkers will soon be home to a variety of popular Gaelic games including football and hurling. In a December 4th announcement, the New York Minor Board (NYMB) revealed plans to move forward with the Redmond Park Redevelopment Project and bring venues for the games to the heart of Yonkers.

The milestone marks a major step in the evolution of Gaelic games Yonkers and across the US. In what NYMB calls an “ambitious initiative,” the City of Yonkers recognized the site’s potential. As such, it provided the group with a signed License Agreement to develop a modern and accessible facility. NYMB Chairperson Danny Browne is encouraged by the positive impact the new amenities will have in the community.

We are developing something that will stand the test of time and leave a lasting legacy for Gaelic games in New York.

Park Named for Irish-American Hero

The new home for Gaelic games was named for Hugh Francis Redmond, born in Yonkers in 1919. He served in the 101st Airborne Division during World War II and later joined the OSS, precursor to the CIA. Sent to Shanghai in 1946 for intelligence gathering, he faced arrest in 1951 during an evacuation attempt, leading to nearly 20 years of imprisonment in China on espionage charges. Despite enduring torture, Redmond maintained his cover until his alleged suicide in 1970. The CIA acknowledged his role in 2000, honoring him with a memorial star. His gravestone reads: “His country above all else.”

Inspired by Dublin’s Croke Park

In addition to two illuminated practice fields, the redesigned park will showcase a full-sized Gaelic field “akin to the hallowed grounds of Croke Park, allowing athletes to compete and train on a pitch that honors the dimensions of Ireland’s most storied arena.”

Concept art for the facility and grounds shows a large main field, smaller practice fields and extensive parking. The space is being developed to ensure accessibility for players and spectators of all ages.

This project will deliver a safe and vibrant environment for our children to play and appreciate the games that are an integral part of our Irish heritage.

Creating a Hub for Gaelic Games

With the upgrades and expansion, Redmond Park is poised to become a central hub for Gaelic games in Westchester. Located on Cook Avenue in Yonkers, the 35-acre park and facilities are close to “Little Ireland.” The park is also close to Gaelic Park in The Bronx—a similar initiative in development by the New York Gaelic Athletic Association.

Browne also praised the development as a “game changer” for the organization and community. “The NYMB is delighted to reach this agreement, which is a significant step forward in our mission to provide top-class facilities for the growth and development of Gaelic games here in New York,” he said.

The NYMB announced that, prior to the official launch of the Redevelopment Project for Redmond Park to the broader community, it has already invested $500,000 in construction and soft costs. The overall budget for the project amounts to approximately $3.5 million.

Donations to support the project can be made online, by check, or through a pledge. NYMB, being a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, ensures that contributions are tax-deductible. The Redmond Park Redevelopment Project is scheduled to unfold in three phases, from November 2023 extending through April 2027.
