Council Member Corazón Pineda-Isaac to Challenge Spano for Mayor

Democrat Corazón Pineda-Isaac, Yonkers City Council representative for the 2nd council district, announced her candidacy for Mayor of Yonkers via a private email to supporters.

Elected in 2013 to serve on Yonkers City Council, Pineda-Isaac was then re-elected for a second four-year term. In 2018 and 2022, she voted against extending term limits for city officers. However, she did seek and is presently serving a third term for herself.

As a mayoral candidate, Pineda-Isaac wishes to continue advocating for and serving the people of Yonkers.

“Part of what makes Yonkers special is the diversity that flourishes here.”

Before entering public service, Pineda-Isaac earned her Bachelors of Science degree with a major in Finance from Long Island University-C.W Post. She entered the financial sector with AXA Advisors, and continued to build her career as a Financial Professional — a designation she maintains along with the FINRA Registrations Series 7 and Series 63, and life and health insurance licenses.

Pineda-Isaac relocated with her Dominican parents to Westchester as a teen. As she became more active in the Yonkers community as a young adult, she was eager to gain experience in the political sphere. In 2012, Pineda-Isaac volunteered on George Latimer‘s campaign for New York State Senate, and became a Democratic district leader. Her involvement in politics at the local level gave her a new perspective into the immediate needs of Yonkersites — and inspired her to run for city council in 2013.

As a Yonkers City Council Member, Pineda-Isaac has fought for issues related to protecting the working class. These include legislation for police body cameras and a registry to protect tenants from negligent landlords. In her announcement message, Pineda-Isaac is enthusiastic about her mayoral campaign and the potential for positive change in Yonkers.

“I am very proud of what we have done together.”

Pineda-Isaac is the fourth entrant into the Democratic primary race. Mayor Mike Spano seeks a fourth term after signing a law allowing himself to seek an additional term. Margaret Fountain-Coleman announced her challenge at the steps of City Hall last month. And Prince Robinson is also vying for the nomination. The now crowded field will likely create an easier path for the deep-pocketed incumbent to secure the nomination.

The Democratic primary election will be held on June 23rd.
