Yonkers District Leaders Lose Out Once Again

This has been an exciting start to 2023 if you are interested and involved in Yonkers politics! First, term limits, then redistricting, now endorsements for political office since petitioning starts on February 28th.

There are roughly 470 District Leaders in the Yonkers Democratic Party. Many look forward to engaging in the process of endorsing candidates for office and feel the effect of their weighted vote! Unfortunately, because of the delay in the redistricting process – and perhaps for other less transparent reasons – there will be no Democratic convention this year. (Does the Republican party even have one?) The decision was made by Yonkers Democratic Committee Chair Tom Meier to bag the convention, which was originally slated for February 8th via Zoom. But now, the Executive Committee will solely decide who to endorse.

A number of district leaders are unhappy. Ward 4 district leaders voted to officially object to the cancellation of the convention at their meeting last night. Is there time to organize an in-person convention for February 21st, instead of having the Executive Committee be the sole decision makers? This writer thinks so!
