An Open Letter About Basketball Coach Bryan Williams by London Reyes

I’m writing this letter once I discovered that the coach at Roosevelt High School in Yonkers was Bryan Williams, a coach of Hall of Fame caliber known for his positive contributions to the world of basketball. Mr. Williams has played a crucial role in guiding numerous young women toward college opportunities through basketball, resulting in many securing Division 1 scholarships and even playing in the WNBA.

I had the privilege of meeting Bryan Williams about 15 years ago while working for Nike. I participated in their basketball camps and tournaments, providing me with the opportunity to witness some of the finest basketball coaches in the tri-state area. What stood out about Mr. Williams was his coaching style. Unlike many other coaches, he never raised his voice, maintained control, never deviated from his character, and relied on inspiration rather than intimidation to convey his message. His coaching approach left a lasting impression on me. His ability to inspire players and witness them achieve phenomenal success in college and the WNBA is truly remarkable.

When asked about the unfortunate situation involving the termination of Mr. Williams due to his player’s alleged antisemitic remarks, I was shocked. The Bryan Williams I know is a Hall of Fame basketball coach with a résumé that could secure a coaching position anywhere in the country. His coaching prowess is highly regarded, akin to the Phil Jackson of girls’ basketball. Now, it would be surprising if he ever coaches again.

It’s important to note that as an African-American coach, Mr. Williams is married to a white woman, raising biracial children, with family members who are Jewish. This added layer of diversity in his personal life makes it difficult for me to believe that a person of such great character would be involved in anything negative, particularly something as disgusting and ugly as antisemitic remarks.

Upon watching the Channel 12 News interview with Mr. Williams, I feel profound sadness for Yonkers and, more importantly, the children who have lost a Hall of Fame coach with impeccable character due to allegations that may lack merit. This situation is disheartening, given the significant impact Mr. Williams has had on the lives of young athletes over the years.
