Yonkers “Safe Stop” Catches Violators Endangering School Children at Bus Stops

The Yonkers Police Department recently released video highlighting numerous violators of the new, “Yonkers Safe Stop” School Bus Safety Program.

In an effort to prioritize the safety of school children, The City of Yonkers recently implemented stringent measures to catch motorists who fail to stop for school buses with activated stop-arms and flashing red lights. The latest move includes the installation of school bus stop-arm safety cameras on buses throughout the city.

The initiative, prompted by a 2019 New York state law, is called “Yonkers Safe Stop” and launched in November 2023. In collaboration with Verra Mobility, it utilizes cameras on hundreds of schoolbuses to protect 12,000 students who rely on them.

The penalties

Motorists who miss the memo about the new safety measures will find themselves facing fines in the mail. The first fine starts at $250. A second offense within 18 months escalates the fine to $275. Ultimately, repeat offenders accumulating three or more violations suffer a $300 penalty per violation.

YPD Officers are also actively patrolling to catch offenders. For those cited by an officer, the penalties become even more severe. A first conviction could result in a fine ranging from $250 to $400 and/or up to 30 days in jail. A second conviction within three years could lead to a fine between $600 and $750 and/or up to 180 days in jail. Those with three or more convictions within three years may face a fine ranging from $750 to $1000 and/or up to 180 days in jail. Additionally, a citation by the police results in a significant five-point penalty on the offender’s license.

In a united effort to keep roadways safe, Yonkers urges everyone to adhere to these crucial safety measures. The fines are not just financial penalties; they underscore the commitment to safeguarding the well-being of its youngest residents.
