Yonkers DPW Rolls Out New Electric Garbage Truck

The City of Yonkers continues its pursuit of renewable energy alternatives by testing its first all-electric garbage truck.

This truck is the only in Yonkers and being used as a test on a real garbage route along the west side of the city. This model is manufactured by Mack Trucks (owned by the Volvo Group) and has 448 HP engines with 4,051 lb.-ft. of torque. The company claims that they are “…the market leader in the refuse industry, is also a leader in e-mobility.” New York City first tested these same trucks in September 2020 and has since grown their use.

This is not the first electric vehicle to be added to the City’s fleet. In 2021, the Yonkers Police Department put into a service a Tesla Model 3. Chris Sapienza of the YPD noted the potential savings, “We still have to pay for the electricity, but it’s about 15-20% what we would normally pay to gas these vehicles, and between the less maintenance and less fuel, we estimate that within two years we’re gonna see a dramatic savings.”

Therefore, the Telsa police cruiser and the new electric garbage truck march forward Mayor Mike Spano‘s earlier push for Green Fleet Standards for City Vehicles legislation.

“We must lead by example in demonstrating to our residents and businesses that, together, we can all play a role in a more sustainable, greener city”

Mike Spano – Mayor of Yonkers
