Proposed Ludlow Waterfront Park Progresses with New Designer

The City of Yonkers has contracted the Bowman Consulting Group to design its newest park in the Ludlow neighborhood.

Yonkers is expanding its park land with the recent acquisition of scenic waterfront property along the Hudson River. The city plans to create a new park on the 130,000-square-foot parcel of land located in the Southwest Yonkers. The multiple now-vacant lots, along with a bus depot, are near the Ludlow station. This acquisition makes it the most significant addition to Yonkers’ park system in years.

Southwest Yonkers is the only portion of the City’s waterfront not to have a public park, and we are now well on the way to changing that.

Mike Spano – Mayor of Yonkers

The development of the park will be a joint effort between the City of Yonkers government and Westchester County. While Yonkers paid $13 million for the land, the county promised $10 million towards design and construction of the park.

A professional procured

The city has awarded Bowman Consulting Group with the park’s design contract. Bowman is a Virginia-based consulting firm that provides solutions in real estate, infrastructure, and environmental management to public and private clients nationwide. Bowman also designed the landscape for the Enslaved African Rain Garden shortly north on the waterfront near Getty Square.

The design of the new park will serve as a resilient waterfront recreational space. It will have a playground, fitness equipment, a splash pad, a boat launch with kayak rentals, and designated areas for Yonkers emergency services and river entry.

It will also be capable of handling periodic flooding; including flood-resistant elements like a robust stormwater drainage system, elevated park features, and durable materials.

Bowman also conducted a traffic study to ensure the park’s construction does not disrupt nearby businesses.

We value this opportunity to help the City of Yonkers bring a new park to the Ludlow area.

The park may be ready sooner than you think with designs proposed at the end of this year and ground-breaking on construction next summer.
