Local Comic Book Store Saved by Supportive Fans

In January 2023, local Yonkers comic book shop, The Spider’s Web, announced it was closing. But, two of its own superhero’s came to save the day. Customers Rich Kean and Thomas Ramirez purchased the store and are now operating it out of their love of comics.

A Facebook post by The Spider’s Web dated Tuesday January 3, 2023 announced that it was closing that week. After 10 years in business, owner Paul Borrero decided to move on to other endeavors after 10 years in business.

Long-time patrons and best friends, Rich and Thomas, almost immediately decided to save the business–giving the shop its very own sequel. After two months of downtime, The Spider’s Web re-opened in mid-March 2023. Since then, the duo have received praise from locals who love the real sense of community that this establishment brings to Yonkers Avenue.

But, Rich and Thomas are not the only ones minding the shop. Andrew has worked at the store almost since it opened under its original owner a decade ago. While only working part-time now, his familiar face and knowledge of the business has proved invaluable in keeping things moving forward.

And moving forward while keeping the “friendly neighborhood comic shop vibe” is what Rich precisely wants to do. The Spider’s Web is expanding its Manga and kids section while also beefing up its selection of back issues. Co-owner Thomas has even planned to host a retro video-game night complete with VHS/DVD classics playing on TVs in the background.

But, comics are first and foremost here. And what makes this a destination for comic-lovers is the prominence of independent titles. While many stores won’t take up valuable real estate with low-volume merchandise, The Spider’s Web stocks half of its new release wall with non Marvel/DC books. Rich himself has been enjoying an anthology series from Image comics titled, “Ice Cream Man.”

But this store isn’t just for the habitual “Wednesday warriors” who come week after week for new releases. Even if you are a newcomer to comics, the staff are sure that they can make great recommendations. Simply tell them what sort of movies, music, or TV shows you like. From that, they will offer you something right up your alley.

So, whether you’re a comic book novice or a veteran, you’ll be glad that this local business is still standing thanks to the support of its faithful fans.

You can visit The Spider’s Web most days from 11am to 7pm at their storefront on 877 Yonkers Avenue.
