Lawmakers Seek to Name Bridge after Fallen Yonkers Police Officer Frank Gualdino

The Yonkers City Council adopted a resolution that supports State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Assembly Member Nader J. Sayegh’s bills seeking to name the Tuckahoe Road overpass crossing the Sprain Brook Parkway the “Detective Sergeant Frank Gualdino Memorial Bridge.”

The Passing of a Hometown Hero

On Thursday, Dec. 1, 2022, the 24-year veteran of the Yonkers Police Department tragically passed away. Authorities received reports of a multi-vehicle accident at the Sprain Brook Parkway overpass on Tuckahoe Road. Several vehicles including a 2020 BMW M5, a Bee-Line bus, and an unmarked YPD 2012 Chevrolet Impala were all involved. The culpable 16-year-old driver of the BMW sustained serious injuries. Detective Sergeant Frank “Furby” Gualdino lost his life due to the injuries sustained in the crash.

In October 2023, a grand jury in Westchester County indicted the minor on one count of Criminally Negligent Homicide. However, he will not face any criminal penalties due to the “Raise the Age” legislation that increases the age of criminal responsibility to 18.

To mark the one-year anniversary of his passing, a memorial ceremony took place at the 1st Precinct/Traffic Division where the officer served throughout his career. A profound memorial sign was unveiled in honor of Sgt. Gualdino. In addition to this sign, lawmakers from Yonkers recently drafted legislation to rename the bridge after Frank Gualdino via bills in the Senate and Assembly (S.8121/A8359). The Yonkers City Council supported these bills with a unanimous vote on a resolution during Tuesday night’s meeting.

The proposed ‘Detective Sergeant Frank Gualdino Memorial Bridge’ serves as a poignant reminder of the dedication and sacrifice of law enforcement officers. […] By designating this section of the highway system, the city pays tribute to Detective Sergeant Gualdino’s service and upholds his legacy for generations to come. May we never forget his professionalism and dedication in serving our great City of Yonkers.
