Four-Alarm Fire in Yonkers Hospitalizes Residents and Displaces Families

An overnight fire in a Yonkers apartment building on Caryl Avenue has left multiple people hospitalized and numerous families displaced. The blaze broke out around 10 p.m. on Saturday. It quickly escalated to a four-alarm fire, prompting the response of more than 90 firefighters.

Eyewitnesses described the terrifying scene as thick smoke enveloped the building, prompting panic among residents. Shane Leak, a tenant, recounted the chaos to CBS New York. In an interview he stated, “I ran into a total blackout. That was total fear and total death, total darkness.”

Firefighters heroically rescued a woman trapped inside the third-floor unit, administering CPR before rushing her to a nearby hospital. Two other occupants from the same unit managed to escape on their own. Deputy Fire Chief Joseph Citrone emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “We were lucky that it didn’t get to the roof and spread to the entire building.”

There was a man on the third floor that jumped out the window. He was bleeding everywhere.

Fortunately, the hospitalized individuals are reported to be in stable condition.

Despite YFD’s efforts, the fire ravaged the third and fourth floors, necessitating the evacuation of the entire four-story building. The Red Cross stepped in to assist the displaced residents, opening an emergency shelter at the Peter Chema Sr. Community Center.

As the investigation into the cause of the fire unfolds, affected families are grappling with the aftermath. The Red Cross, in collaboration with Yonkers officials, is providing support and shelter to those unable to return to their homes, offering hope amidst the devastation.
