Council Member Tasha Diaz and Team Distribute 1000s of Pounds of Food

It was a busy day for Council Member Tasha Diaz and her team as they handed out thousands of pounds of food in Yonkers and White Plains.

Distribution points were set up in five different locations in the county to allow convenient access for those in need. Officials hope the event will be the first of many providing food to members of the community.

Council member Diaz organized the giveaways as a way to connect with and serve her community. On her Facebook page, Diaz was excited about this week’s event and is optimistic about the potential for the future.

“Yesterday’s food distribution of over 30,000 plus pounds was a huge success!” Diaz wrote. “We were able to distribute food throughout the city as well as neighboring cities. This is what it’s all about servicing the community I love!”

According to Bronx News 12, Diaz plans to work with her team to distribute food community members each week throughout the summer.

“We are going to get 10,000 pounds of fresh produce every week, and we are not asking for ID, you don’t have to sign anything,” said Diaz. “You don’t have to be in a specific district, you can come from anywhere. I have people on line from Port Chester so this is how big this has spread.”

As a lifelong resident of Yonkers, councilmember Diaz originally ran for city council in 2019 as a way to directly help people in her community. In distributing food in Yonkers and White Plains, Diaz acknowledged the assistance of other community members and organizations.

“Thank you to Feeding Westchester, Jeffrey Meyer, Ridgeway Alliance Church Food Pantry, and Mayor Mike Spano for all the support.”
