Yonkers Public Library Gala Celebrates Literary Champions Mary Calvi and Sandy Ernest Amoyaw

Anticipation is building for the upcoming annual Gala hosted by the Foundation for the Yonkers Public Library (FYPL). Scheduled for Thursday, April 25th, from 6 to 9pm, at the Riverfront Library, the event promises an evening of celebration.

Themed “Making Waves,” the Gala underscores the YPL’s pivotal role in fostering learning, growth, and connection within the community. Attendees can look forward to an enchanting evening overlooking the Hudson River. In addition to featuring delectable cuisine and lively music, the Gala also hosts engaging activities such as a themed photo booth and live auctions.

Early Bird tickets are available until April 8th, with discounts offered for educators, librarians, and students. Proceeds will bolster YPL programming across its three branches, ensuring continued access to educational and cultural resources for Yonkersites.

Honoring individuals

This year’s Gala shines a spotlight on two remarkable individuals who have significantly contributed to the Yonkers Public Library’s success. Mary Calvi, an acclaimed journalist, author, and First Lady of Yonkers, will be honored alongside Sandy Amoyaw, a dedicated veteran librarian who has served the community for over three decades.

Foundation President Nancy Maron expressed her excitement about honoring “great friend of the Yonkers Public Library,” Mary Calvi. Calvi, a New York Emmy award-winning journalist, will be celebrated for her literary achievements, including her latest novel, If a Poem Could Live and Breathe: A Novel of Teddy Roosevelt’s First Love. Calvi’s connection to the Yonkers Public Library reflects her lifelong commitment to fostering literacy and education.

Additionally, the Gala will recognize Sandy Amoyaw for his dedication and innovative leadership as the Administrator of the Riverfront Library. Sandy Amoyaw’s exemplary service to the Yonkers Public Library spans over thirty years. As the Branch Administrator, he has spearheaded transformative initiatives, enriching the library experience for patrons. Beyond his professional endeavors, Amoyaw remains actively involved in various community organizations, embodying the spirit of service and leadership.
