Manhattan College Names Yonkers Army Veteran as Class of 2024 Valedictorian

James Washington, a U.S. Army veteran and 2024 graduate of Manhattan College, has been announced as the undergraduate valedictorian for the class of 2024. Hailing from Yonkers, Washington’s journey is a story of service and determination.

Washington’s path to academic success wasn’t conventional. After attending Lincoln High School for two years, his family relocated to South Carolina. There, he completed his education at Lancaster High School. Following a year of work, he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2012, serving honorably until 2020. His military service took him across the globe. From Fort Carson, CO, to Kuwait and Kosovo, and finally to Vilseck, Germany, before concluding in Oklahoma.

Upon his return to New York, Washington sought guidance from the Bronx Veterans’ Administration. This led him to Manhattan College in January 2021, where he found a welcoming and supportive community. Reflecting on his apprehensions as an older student and member of the LGBT community, Washington expressed gratitude for the inclusive environment fostered at the college.

Washington’s successes extend beyond academics; he is now contemplating further education in nursing, reflecting his commitment to serving others. Dr. Milo Riverso, President of Manhattan College, praised Washington’s exceptional journey, emphasizing the college’s commitment to diversity and community. “His life experiences thus far have been extraordinary, and we all know that he will continue along a path of helping others succeed as he has.” stated Dr. Riverso in an announcement on Washington’s achievement.

As Washington prepares to address his fellow graduates at the May 18 Undergraduate Commencement, his story showcases the transformative power of education and resilience. With his sights set on a career in nursing, Washington’s future remains bright, embodying the spirit of service and excellence instilled in both his military service and education at Manhattan College.
