Yonkers Public Library Receives $25,000 Grant Boost from New York State Council on the Arts

The Yonkers Public Library has proudly announced its reward of a $25,000 grant from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA). Part of NYSCA’s broader initiative to support the nonprofit arts and culture sector, this grant marks a significant milestone for YPL and its commitment to fostering creativity and cultural appreciation within the community.

The NYSCA has allocated over $80 million since the spring 2023 to more than 1,500 artists and organizations across the state. Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized the economic and communal impact of the arts by citing a staggering $151.7 billion in economic activity generated nationwide by nonprofit arts and culture organizations and their audiences in 2022.

A groundbreaking grant

For YPL, this grant signifies a first-time recognition from NYSCA. Library Director Jesse Montero expressed pride in the acknowledgment of YPL’s efforts to support arts appreciation and education in Yonkers. “This grant will help us further expand our offerings and impact,” said Montero, highlighting the library’s commitment to enriching the local arts scene.

YPL serves as a cultural hub in Yonkers, with the Riverfront Auditorium and Joan M. Pincus Auditorium hosting large cultural programs and performances from both local and regional artists. The library’s support also extends beyond physical spaces. It encompasses artist education, professional development, and networking opportunities through initiatives like the Artist Bootcamp series.

The Riverfront Library, one of YPL’s prominent venues, houses the Riverfront Art Gallery, currently hosting the exhibition “Across Imaginary Boundaries.” This exhibition features local artists from the Caribbean diaspora, showcasing YPL’s dedication to diversity and inclusion. Simultaneously, the Will Library is presenting “The Art of Satish Joshi,” a retrospective of works from a noted local artist.

Mayor Mike Spano expressed his satisfaction at the state-level recognition for the library’s important work.

YPL supports our city’s thriving arts scene by fostering a love of arts and culture in our youth, championing emerging local artists through exhibitions, and hosting countless cultural programs and performances.

As YPL continues to play a pivotal role in Yonkers’ cultural landscape, the grant from NYSCA acknowledges its contributions and acts as a catalyst for further growth in the space of arts and culture.
