High school students across the country are participating in the Artistic Discovery Contest, a national Congressional Art Competition hosted by the U.S. House of Representatives and sponsored by the Congressional Institute.
In New York’s 16th District, Congressman Jamaal Bowman is proud to host the contest for young artists in Yonkers and neighboring communities and stated on Twitter that the winner’s art will be displayed in the Capitol Building.
For 16 years, the Congressional Art Competition has been a showcase of the highest calibre of artistic talent in high school students nationwide. Students are asked to submit their most creative artwork by May 5th to be considered for the prestigious award.
The winning artist will have their contribution displayed in the Capitol Building for 11 months, and may also be invited to Washington, D.C. for the Congressional Art Reception. The runner-up and third place winner will have their artwork displayed in Congressman Bowman’s district and D.C. congressional offices.
Submission Guidelines for the Congressional Art Competition:

Requirements:
- Student must attend school or reside in NY-16 and be in grades 9 to 12.
- Artistic submissions must be original and not in contravention of U.S. copyright laws.
- Artwork dimensions must be within 26” x 26” and no deeper than 4”.
- Artwork should weigh less than 15 lbs.
- A completed Student Information and Release Form signed by the student, their parent, and their teacher.
- A digital image of the artwork must be uploaded with each submission.

- Paint
- Collage
- Drawing (pencil, colored pencil, charcoal, ink, marker, pastels)
- Computer-generated art
- Photography
- Print (silkscreen, block print, lithograph)
